BioInitiative Press Release
April 9, 2009
Dr. Andrzej Rys
Director of Public Health
European Commission
Directorate-General's Office
Brussels, Belgium
Dear Dr. Rys,
The BioInitiative Working Group extends its congratulations on your recent successful
EMF Workshop in Brussels February 11 and 12th. We are gratified that two of our
BioInitiative Working Group members, Dr. Kundi and Mr. Gee were invited to present
short talks. Thank you for this opportunity.
In reviewing the recent European Parliament EMF Resolution that was adopted April 2nd,
it has come to our attention that one amendment added near the end of the process has
designated SCENIHR to be the scientific review body that will decide when sufficient
evidence exists to recommend new precautionary action. We support this action with the
following caveat.
We urge you to recommend that the SCENIHR committee examine the evidence from the
standpoint of the “possibility of risk from chronic exposure to low-intensity EMF.” This
is in line with their original charge. The cover of their 2006 Report says “Possible Health
Effects” but it is clear the question they eventually answered is “is there causal
evidence?” We note with dismay that their 2009 re-review now says only “Health
Effects of Exposure to EMF.” This shift has profound consequence for the review
process, and the answer to the question.
This is not trivial word-play – but a fundamental issue that in large part determines
whether and when the SCENIHR is enabled to conclude that new action is warranted for
protection of the public from potential health risks.
We hope that you to will discuss this matter both with staff under your direction, and
with the SCENIHR committee.
